In the United States, Hall & Oates were number one on the Billboard chart with Kiss On My List.

In the United States, the song on top of the Billboard charts for this week in 1980 was Blondie with Call Me.  The disco vibe was still going strong in the charts on both sides of the ocean.

The same song had only just left the number one slot in the USA Billboard charts and had been replaced by Roxette and The Look.

In the United States, Michael Jackson had the Billboard chart dominated with his Man In The Mirror.

In the 80′s you couldn’t have a big film without having a big song that went along with that film. That probably had a lot to do with the popularity of music videos. If the song’s video could be packed full of scenes from the film then every time it got played on MTV it was a free advertisement.

The marketing ploy worked because even to this day there are some 80′s songs that I simply can not hear without having scenes from the corresponding movie popping up in my head. Here are five examples of 80′s songs that are, for me,  forever linked to an 80′s movie.

Don’t You Forget About Me – Simple Minds

If there is one film that screams ’80′s music soundtrack’ then it has to be Don’t You Forget About Me by Simple Minds.  There can’t be many children of the 80′s that don’t have their mind flooded with images from The Breakfast Club dancing through their head.

Literally dancing probably because that image of Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson and crew doing the dance along the railing of the school library is the first to appear.  Proof of the power of the music video though because that scene in The Breakfast Club doesn’t actually include that song. It shows up on the TV monitors behind Jim Kerr in the music video for Don’t You Forget About Me.

Glory Of Love – Peter Cetera

Ah, the power ballad. The first Karate Kid had its own song with the You’re The Best by Joe Esposito but for me the Karate Kid song that is most welded to one of the movies actually comes from Karate Kid II.  Whenever the airy sounds of Peter Cetera singing  Glory of Love come across the airways,  Mr. Miyagi and Daniel are back in Japan. Even upon the first note of the song, I see Daniel breaking the stacks of ice in a strange Japanese bar.

The Power of Love – Huey Lewis and the News

Pushing aside glory, we now have The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News. I am not at all afraid to admit that I listened to my cassette tape version of their album Fore so often as a kid that the writing on the front was totally worn off. As easy as Huey Lewis is to mock these days, it was proper good fun music for me back then.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one that liked them because when a soundtrack was being selected for Back to the Future somebody obviously thought they would make the perfect music to risk your life to as you skateboarded while clinging onto the back bumpers of moving cars. Good times! Just the opening synth notes have to play before I am seeing a denim clad Michael J Fox making his way through those streets.

True – Spandau Ballet

Being all of eight years old when Sixteen Candles came out, it went a long way to shaping my image of what a high school dance would be like.  As far as I was concerned, the most romantic thing that could ever happen at any dance would be asked to dance while Spandau Ballet’s True was playing.

When moving to the UK, where Spandau Ballet were one of the most successful bands of the 80′s, I found myself to be pretty much the only person  I knew here that was unable to  listen to True without images of Molly Ringwald and pals hanging out on school bleachers  at a dance launching in the brain.  I think this possibly could because it was such a proper hit on its own here that it isn’t so linked to the film.  However, I know that amongst my fellow American 80′s children this song is always about Jake Ryan.

The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough – Cyndi Lauper

Okay, this one may be slightly cheating because it does have the actual name of the movie in the song title. Plus, at various points on the song you hear ‘Goonies, Goonies’ going in the background.  Still, it counts for me because I can’t hear the song or see the film without associating one with the other. Plus, it does sound a lot like the song already existed and then they added the Goonies bit onto the tittle and the song.

The older I get, the more that I enjoy looking back on Cyndi Lauper videos because she was almost too tongue in cheek with her ‘act’ for the kids of the time to fully appreciate. What a great sense of humour and a great voice hidden under that orange hair! The use of so many of of the professional wrestlers of the day in her videos and as her body guards was just so much fun. Dare I say it, I like her way better than Madonna.

In the United States, the number one song on the Billboard music chart was Club Nouveau and Lean On Me.  A song which proved very popular that year in the United States and ended up being covered widely.  I clearly remember Tammy Faye Baker and her daughter doing a duet version of the song. Some things you can’t shake from your brain no matter how hard you try.

Here are five of the movies coming out this year that are remakes or reworkings of 80′s ideas.

Clash of the Titans

If you are a child of 80′s cinema then there is a chance that your knowledge of the Greek myths started with the 1981 version of Clash of the Titans.  I know that my mental image of what makes a Medusa comes completely from the film.  Back in the days before most homes had cable, it was one of those 80′s films that would show up on tv in the mid-afternoon weekend slot. Which made sure that it was watched frequently by those of us that were too lazy to turn the TV off after the cartoons had finished.

Even those of us that have fond memories of the original Clash of the Titans, must admit that the effects in the film have not stood up well over time. No doubt, that is something that will be corrected in the the new version of Clash of the Titans. The 1981 Clash of the Titans, has been remade and will have a general release in the United States on March 26th, but a 3-D version is on its way out in time for the April 2nd general release. Those pegasus are going to be flying right out of the screen at you this time around!

The original Clash of the Titans may have featured an LA Law bound Harry Hamlin but the rest of the cast was pretty weighty and included such names as Ursula Andress, Maggie Smith, Burgess Meredith and even Laurence Olivier.  This time around, the cast of  bringing  the Greek myth of  Perseus to the big screen will include Sam Worthington, Alexa Davalos, Danny Huston and Pete Postlethwaite.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

When you closed your eyes as a child and thought of the boogie man did he look something like Freddy Krueger? Even if we were far too young to officially be allowed to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street when it came out in 1984, there weren’t many kids of that era that didn’t know a great deal about the character.

Robert Englund, portrayal of the the razor fingered bad guy that gets you in your sleep, plays directly into all the insecurities that kids have about being alone in their rooms at night.  So much so, that many of us have carried the image of Freddy Krueger with us into adulthood as the ultimate bad guy.

Apparently, the original A Nightmare on Elm Street isn’t scary enough for today’s kids though because it is being remade.  Due out on April, 30, 2010, the new A Nightmare on Elm Street slightly alters the premise by having the kids that are getting attacked by Freddy Krueger connecting with each other over the internet.  Nothing like a modern twist to be able to claim you are a whole new film, eh?

If you watch the original trailer and the trailer for the new version of A Nightmare on Elm Street, they have actually done a pretty good job with making the new trailer scary. How the actual film pans out is something different.

The Karate Kid

It has to be said, that when news that The Karate Kid was being remade came out my heart sank. There are just some things you don’t touch. The wounds from  The Next Karate Kid with Hillary Swank were barely healed and now they were planning on pouring even more salt into them? Then, it got even worse when it came out that the actor playing the Ralph Macchio role was going to be Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith.

Yet, somehow I managed to push the impending doom to the back of my head and forgot that it was being made. Then suddenly a trailer for the 2010 The Karate Kid hit the internet. Check out the trailer for the original The Karate Kid and then compare it to the new one.

The first thing that stands out for me is that they have gone for a much younger feel to the film. The second thing that stands out that he is doing kung fu not karate! Why on earth didn’t they just call it The Kung Fu Kid and saved us all having to freak out about them remaking a film we loved so much from the 80′s.

Tron

Now, this one is setting my geeky sense tingling. Tron, the film which fuelled the mind of so many budding geeks back in 1982, is getting another outing. However, unlike the other films mentioned so far, the new Tron isn’t a remake as such. Nope, instead it is called Tron Legacy and is a follow on from the original film. So, much of a follow on that all the right people from the first Tron are back and in their proper roles!

Tron Legacy won’t be hitting the big screen until December 2010 but their trailers are doing a lot to make many of us hope that this might be the one 80′s film reworking this year that proves to be properly good. The graphics are looking amazing for starters and it will, of course, be available in 3D.

Both Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner (using his best John Sheridan  voice in the trailer) are back and Michael Sheen is it it too so they are going to have to really mess this one up for it not to be super exciting for the 80′s geek kids who are now all grown up (well, mostly!).

A-Team

Not all of the 80′s remake films are getting their inspiration form the films of the era.  Some of them are reaching back to the glory days of 80′s TV instead.  That is the case with the new A-Team movie.  There is so much to be unsure of about this film.

Most important of these, has to be the casting. Normally, seeing Liam Neeson in a line up would be a good thing but I am just not sure I buy him as Hannibal. Not to mention that it is mighty hard to separate Mr. T from the role of B.A. Baracus.

Though, you never know, the plan might just come together and it could be some good popcorn munching fun.

Obviously, there is no trailer for a first A-Team movie. So, I have put in the intro to the original show just to show the differences between the casts. If nothing else, that is still a great theme song!

Pretenders

Chrissie Hynde has to be one of the best front women of all time never mind just in 80′s music.  It is said that when Hynde and pals were looking for a name, they looked to the music of The Platters and their song The Great Pretender.

Take a listen to the original song and see if you can blame them for loving the beauty of the song. Perhaps not a load in common with the music produced by the Pretenders other than both groups have done some great songs.

Mr. Mister

The band behind such 80′s belters such as Broken Wings and Kyrie are said to have looked to the works of the legendary Marc Bolan and his band T-Rex for their eventual name.  The song is called Mister Mister and is from T-Rex’s Tanx album.

Simple Minds

You aren’t a fully paid up 80′s child if the Simple Minds song Don’t You Forget About Me doesn’t leave you reaching for your DVD of The Breakfast Club. Heck, a few misty eyed tears while thinking of the passing of John Hughes would be more than acceptable.

Jim Kerr and Simple Minds were far more than that (great) song though. They have produced some of the best music to come out of Scotland and not just in the 80′s.

When Simple Minds was searching for a band name they gave their nod to their appreciation of David Bowie’s music. The term ‘simple minds’ comes from a line in his Jean Genie song. A true masterpiece of a song so nobody can blame them for that choice!

Sisters Of Mercy

If you dyed your hair black in the 80′s and called yourself a goth than chances are Sisters of Mercy were on your personal play list. Did you know, however, that the band that brought us Temple Of Love , were inspired to name themselves after a Leonard Cohen song.

That’s right, the gravelled voice Cohen had a song called Sisters of Mercy and the band adopted the name from there.  It is a very gentle song that doesn’t have a whole lot in common with the image of the band but you can see why it might appeal to a goth minded band.

Wet Wet Wet

For many of us, Wet Wet Wet may cause involuntary shivers as we recall *that* song from Four Weddings and a Funeral.  There is no denying they had their fans in the 80′s and 90′s though. Clearly they were fans themselves of other  bands too.  Wet Wet Wet took their name from a lyric in a song from the band Scritti Politti.

The lyric is in the Scritti Politti song Gettin, havin’ and holdin. A  song with is apparently impossible to find on Youtube. So, instead we shall have to have a video of  Scritti Politti’s highest charting UK song.

Madness

The classic 80′s Britsh ska band tried on a few different names including Moris and the Minors before finally settling on Madness. The musical roots of Suggs and the rest of the band are clear to anybody that has listened to their music.  The influence of Jamaican music made itself known in their name too.

Madness took their band name from a song of the same name by Prince Buster.   Here is the original version of the song by Prince Buster himself.

On the same week in the United States, Mr. Mister were number one in the Billboard chart with Kyrie.

When MTV launched in the United States in 1981,cable television wasn’t even close to being in everybody’s home and those that did have cable might be using a provider that didn’t carry MTV in their package.

So, MTV went launched the viral ‘I want my MTV!’ campaign that had youth across the land using the phrase to demand their cable providers add MTV.  The phrase became such a part of the language of the time that Dire Straits even included it (sung by Sting) in their Money For Nothing song.

As part of this campaign, MTV called in some hip and happening music stars of the time.  Even well into the 80′s when most people had managed to get their MTV, the station kept the tradition of getting the music stars of the time do these commercials for the station. Check out these clips from the I Want My MTV campaign and see just which 80′s music start were getting in on the act.

This is the first ever image shown on MTV and ever since then the image of the man planting an MTV  flag on the moon has become linked with the station’s identity. The MTV music award is modelled after the image.

Then we had Cindy Lauper, Sting, Billy Idol, David Bowie and Boy George get involved for this hyper neon attack on the senses. If Billy Idol said too much was never enough and David Bowie wanted his MTV then who on earth was going to argue?

Sting was back again for this “I want my MTV!” commercial that mainly featured The Police cut in (for some reason) with a bit of Pat Benetar.

Of  course you couldn’t have MTV in the 1980′s without Madonna getting into the act. This was one of her very own MTV commercials in the height of her Material Girl period.

This version of the “I want my MTV” commercial was a real mix of 80′s music talent. In this one 30 second slot they managed to squeeze in Pete Townsend, Pat Benetar and Billy Joel.

This one is nearly the same as before but with the music doing most of the talking apart from Pat Benetar at the end putting on the ‘call your cable company’ pressure.

This format of the commercial must have worked for them because they repeated it often but with a different mix of 80′s music stars. This one heavily features Michael Jackson (you will notice the first non-white face to show in these commercials) and David Bowie.

Watching all of these commercials brings back how exciting it was to watch MTV back then. It makes me want to ring up MTV and yell “I want my OLD MTV back!”
